The opening ceremony of the Chinese Brain Bank of Medical College of Zhejiang University was held in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. The Medical College of Zhejiang University on April 3rd. Why do we need to build a ‘Brain Bank’?

In China, 16 million of people are suffering from the Alzheimer's disease. said Shumin Duan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Pharmaceutical Department of Zhejiang University. As the leader of the Brain Bank, he has been submitting proposals on the construction of the Brain Bank at the National Political Association Conference by every year since 2012.

  

In 2013, as one of the major scientific and technological projects related to China's future development, the China Brain Project was brewed and launched, in which the Brain Bank is an important resource and plays significant role in the development of basic research and life science.

 

The Chinese Brain Bank of Medical College of Zhejiang University is built to meet the needs of scientific research and to integrate the experts and forces in neuroscience, human anatomy, pathology and other related disciplines.

 

At the opening ceremony, Aimin Bao, Professor of Zhejiang University Medical College and Deputy Director of Chinese Brain Bank of Zhejiang University Medical College, explained in detail the significance of Brain Bank construction, “the Brain Bank will provide mechanistic understandings towards human brain disease which would not be simply revealed by animal models”.

Why do we cooperate withthe First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University?

 

We confirmed the cooperation in brain bank construction in just five minutes. As a famous expert of liver transplantation in China, Tingbo Liang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. He had known about the brain bank of Zhejiang University, so when Shumin Duan proposed to cooperate with the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, he quickly responded.

 

The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University not only has the most mature experience in organ donation, but also has managed at the top level of medical care and overall development. At the opening ceremony, the heads of neuromedicine, psychiatry, pathology, medical science, pharmacy and other departments of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University were all present. Tingbo Liang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, said that the hospital would not only make good use of the existing team of organ donation, but also support the development of the Brain Bank in terms of funds, organizations and other aspects.

How to donate brain?

The booklet of the Brain Bank not only introduces the background of the establishment of the Brain Bank, but also details the donation procedure.

In the procedure, people can get registered by consulting telephone, e-mail or directly visiting the Chinese Brain Bank of Zhejiang University Medical College of Zhejiang University Medical College.

To each registrant, the registration office will return the consent form signed by both parties and issue a memorial card, the office will also issue a certificate of honor for the donated brain after the donation is completed.

The donors will always be remembered, and their names will be engraved on the tablet of Silent Teachers of Zhejiang University Medical College for medical students, scientists and future generations to pay tribute to.
